Ravichandran Ashwin emulates Waqar Younis, Malcolm Marshall with 22nd Test five-wicket haul

first_imgRavichandran Ashwin left the Rajkot Test failure behind him to bounce back in style and grab another five-wicket haul in Test cricket on Saturday.Ashwin was on fire as he picked up five for 67 — his sixth fiver-wicket haul in 2016 — in the ongoing Vizag Test that helped India bundle England out for 255 in their first innings. This after India had scored 455 in their first innings.Interestingly, Ashwin will be on a hat-trick when England come out to bat again in their second innings. Despite having a 200-run advantage, India decided not to enforce a follow-on. (Scorecard)Ashwin bagged his 22 five-wicket haul to equal all-time greats Waqar Younis (Pakistan), and West Indians Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.Only three Indians Anil Kumble (35), Harbhajan Singh (25) and Kapil Dev (23) have more five-wicket hauls than Ashwin.Former India captain and commentator with official broadcasters Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for Ashwin.”Must give credit to Ashwin with the way he bowled. Fully deserving of those five wickets on a pitch that did not assist spinners much,” Gavaskar said on-air.50 WICKETS IN 2016Milestone-man Ashwin also became the second bowler after Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath to breach the 50-wicket barrier in 2016. Last year, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner finished with 62 wickets.Only one other Indian bowler has taken 50 wickets in two consecutive years — Harbhajan did so in 2001 and 2002.50 wickets in a calendar year on most occasions (Indians) Instances Bowler Year 3 Anil Kumble 1999, 2004 & 2006 3 Harbhajan Singh 2001, 2002 & 2008 2 Kapil Dev 1979 & 1983 2 R Ashwin 2015 & 2016 1 Vinoo Mankad 1952 1 Bhagwat Chandrasekhar 1976 1 Zaheer Khan 2002(Stats courtesy Rajneesh Gupta)advertisementlast_img
