first_img Live Stats Southern Illinois 4/2/2016 – 2:00 PM TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Drake University softball team completed its second-straight Missouri Valley Conference series sweep by shutting out Indiana State, 9-0, on Saturday. For third-consecutive game, Drake (16-11, 6-0 MVC) needed just five innings to defeat Indiana State (7-24, 1-6 MVC) by the eight-run rule. On Saturday, the Bulldogs used a combination of timely hitting, outstanding pitching by sophomore Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) and capitalizing on three Sycamores errors. Newman allowed just two hits in five innings while striking out five as she improved to 12-5 with the win. Newman faced just one more batter then the minimum. Drake was led at the plate once again by junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.). Sowa went 2-for-3 with another home run, this a two-run shot, and has four home runs in the last two games. In three games against Indiana State, she went 8-for-10 with three doubles, four home runs, eight runs scored and 14 runs batted in. Freshman Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.) launched her team-leading seventh home run of the season. Frank finished 1-for-3 with one home run, one walk, two runs scored and three RBI. Fellow freshman Melissa Schlotzhauer (Pilot Grove, Mo.) had one double and one run scored. Drake scored one run in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs opened their MVC slate with a three-game sweep of Evansville last weekend. Drake travels to Iowa City, Iowa, for an in-state game with Iowa on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Bulldogs then return to Ron Buel Field on April 2 & 3 to host SIU in their first home MVC series.Print Friendly Version Watch Live Preview Next Game: Full Schedule Roster last_img
