‘Liverpool need a 25 goal-a-season striker? YOU’VE GOT ONE!’ Sherwood backs Benteke

first_imgFormer Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has told Liverpool they do not need to buy a 25 goal-a-season striker to solve their attacking woes, insisting they already have one in Christian Benteke.Belgian frontman Benteke moved to Anfield from Villa Park last summer in a £32.5million deal but has so far struggled to win over fans, as well as new manager Jurgen Klopp. The 25-year-old might be the club’s top goalscorer, but just seven goals in 29 Reds appearances is a measly return for the towering frontman who terrorised defences in a claret and blue shirt.Liverpool have linked with strikers galore over the past few months as Klopp looks to solve his attacking problems – the Merseysiders have scored just 30 goals this season and are the only team inside the Premier League’s top nine to have a minus goal difference [-4].But Sherwood, who coached Benteke back to goalscoring form during his short stint as Villa manager, insists they have no need to look elsewhere for the answer.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Sherwood told talkSPORT: “Klopp isn’t playing Christian on a regular basis, and he seems fit enough, so it seems that he isn’t totally sure about the lad.“For me he’s a great player. He’s a proven, prolific goalscorer in the Premier League. He’s a one-in-two, he’s a great target man and he needs to play with a rhythm.“There’s no point in playing him in one game and he’s out the next. All strikers need to play regularly to produce their best.“I scream at the TV or radio every time I hear somebody saying, ‘Liverpool just need a 20, 25 goal a season man’. They’ve already got one!“He’s proven he can do it in this country. He isn’t a player coming in from abroad and needs time to settle, he’s already done that.“He does have barren spells, as every striker does. He scored two goals in 25 games before I went to Villa, but then he scored 11 in 13 at the end of the season which kept us in the Premier League.“So perhaps it’s my fault he’s went to Liverpool for £32.5million!“He’s at a fantastic club now, with good players and given the proper opportunity he will score goals, I’m sure of it.”last_img
