first_imgAnthony Martial atoned for his early penalty error with a powerful header as Manchester United drew at CSKA Moscow.United, back in the city of one of their finest hours – the 2008 Champions League triumph over Chelsea – found themselves behind as Seydou Doumbia scored the rebound after David De Gea’s penalty save.Martial, the man who gave away the penalty, made amends with 25 minutes remaining as he scored a delightful diving header from 12 yards.The result means United remain second in Group B ahead of the reverse fixture in two weeks’ time.After a quiet start by Manchester United, Martial had a shout for a penalty after he weaved his way into the box and was bundled over but any protestations were dismissed by the referee.However, Martial was involved in a penalty incident at the other end minutes later, as the referee pointed to the spot after the Frenchman handled in the area.De Gea did brilliantly to save the initial effort from Roman Eremenko but Doumbia reacted quickest to slam the rebound into the net.De Gea pulled out another wonder save on the half-hour mark when Ahmed Musa saw the Spaniard off his line but was denied by an acrobatic stop.United struggled to find space in behind the CSKA defence – who were sitting even deeper than they were to start with – as Wayne Rooney was restricted to a shot from 25 yards which sailed over.The barren attacking display by the Red Devils was summed up by the statistic that showed De Gea only had three fewer touches than Rooney in the first half.Marouane Fellaini replaced Bastian Schweinsteiger at half time but it failed to improve the quality of United’s build-up play as CSKA flooded the middle of the field.The visitors’ best chance came when Ander Herrera found himself free on the right and delivered a near-post cross to Rooney, but his header was straight at Igor Akinfeev.Herrera was the architect again minutes later but Jesse Lingard – making his first start since August 2014 – had strayed offside.But on the next attack, United got their goal – and it was Martial who managed to atone for his earlier error which led to the penalty.Antonio Valencia delivered the cross in and the Frenchman saw his diving header come off the post and nestle into the net for his fifth goal in seven starts.Martial almost turned provider with five minutes remaining as he squared from substitute Memphis Depay’s cross but Fellaini could not make contact as Akinfeev dived at his feet.And that was how it ended, while Wolfsburg beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to move to the top of Group B.
