Nationals Squeak By Mets, 2-1

first_imgWASHINGTON — Before his team’s 2-1 loss to the Nationals on April 8, Mets Manager Terry Collins was meeting with reporters, preparing for questions about lineup decisions, when GM Sandy Alderson spoke up from the back of the room.“Hey, Terry. Here’s your lineup for tomorrow,” Alderson said, then reached over and handed a blue card to Collins.Finishing the bit, Collins put the prop in a pocket and joked, “I was waiting for that all day.”Before their team even played its second game of the season, Collins and Alderson were drawn into a debate over whether the skipper or the front office is figuring out who bats where. That includes curiosity about Curtis Granderson leading off instead of Juan Lagares, David Wright’s move to the No. 2 spot from his usual No. 3, and pitcher Jacob deGrom hitting eighth instead of ninth. As it turned out, deGrom came up in a key spot with two men aboard in the second inning, tried to sacrifice them over, but popped up a bunt that first baseman Ryan Zimmerman made a headfirst dive to grab.“That makes a big difference in the game,” said deGrom (0-1), who allowed Zimmerman’s two-run homer in the first.Another important moment involved Granderson later in that inning. With the bases loaded and the count full, he struck out looking at an 86 mph slider from Jordan Zimmermann (1-0) that Granderson thought was a ball. When the call came from umpire Mike Everitt, Granderson leaned in for a chat.“I thought it was up,” Granderson said. “He said otherwise.” Through two games, the Mets have scored one earned run.As for the lineup choices, Collins and Alderson knew that topic would arise.“Well, first of all, you want to know who wrote that lineup? Who came up with it first? And he came up with it on about February 18 — (bench coach) Bob Geren,” Collins said before the game. “So I mean, sources around here, a lot of them don’t know what they’re talking about.”Asked whether he’s been told who should play and who should sit, Collins replied: “Absolutely not.”“The one thing the manager has in his power is this,” Collins said, referring to a lineup card. “He’s got one hammer, and that’s who plays. And I am certainly very, very lucky to have that hammer.”Alderson, for his part, said: “Look, I didn’t have any conversation with Terry about the lineup. I didn’t talk to Bob Geren about the lineup. I was probably as surprised as many about the lineup. But that’s his prerogative.”(HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Knicks Hold Off Wolves, 107-102

first_imgNEW YORK -” In a matchup of top rookies, Karl-Anthony Towns had the better individual matchup but Kristaps Porzingis and the Knicks got the victory.Carmelo Anthony had 20 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, Arron Afflalo scored 29 points, and New York beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 107-102 on Wednesday night.“(Anthony) always makes things easier for us,” Porzingis said. “He was rebounding the ball good, helping us bigs get the rebound. He was passing the ball well. He had nine assists. He was really doing it all on the floor and that’s what we need from him.”Porzingis had 11 points, seven blocks, six rebounds and three assists for the Knicks in his first matchup against Towns, the No. 1 pick.“For Kristaps to block seven shots, he took away seven opportunities for the other team to score,” Knicks coach Derek Fisher said.“That’s more important than him making one more basket. Our guys are continuing to embrace the fact that your stat line won’t make the difference every night. It’s really about the Knicks winning the game.”Anthony felt the same about his high assist total.“There comes a time when you’ve got to do something different to figure the game out and not kind of be narrow-minded coming into the game,” he said.Towns had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Andrew Wiggins scored 23 points, and Zach LaVine had 19 points for the Timberwolves.Ricky Rubio nearly had a quadruple-double with 12 assists, 10 rebounds, nine points and eight steals. The Knicks built a 60-40 halftime lead after outscoring Minnesota 33-14 in the second quarter. Porzingis, the No. 4 pick from Latvia, blocked six shots in the half.“We got down and we missed some shots,” Timberwolves coach Sam Mitchell said. “I think they shot 55 percent in the first half. We missed some shots down the stretch.”Minnesota got within three in the fourth quarter, with Towns scoring 10 points and LaVine nine in the period, but Afflalo put it away at the free throw line. While Porzingis won Round One against Towns, the No. 1 pick look forward to their next matchup.“(Porzingis) is talented,” Towns said. “He proved it again. He’s very talented. He’s a versatile player. I can’t wait to be playing against him for the next 20 years plus.”(MICHAEL SCOTTO) TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Slovenia Hockey Player Tests Positive for Doping at Olympics

first_imgPYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — A Slovenian hockey player who became the third athlete to be caught doping at the Pyeongchang Olympics said Tuesday he tested positive for an asthma drug that he took under doctor’s orders and he had forgotten to seek approval for its use.The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Ziga Jeglic tested positive for fenoterol in an in-competition test. Fenoterol is a drug designed to open the airways to the lungs.“I take the mentioned drug due to asthma under medical advice,” Jeglic said in a statement, adding he was tested on Friday. “It has been prescribed to me after testing for respiratory problems in Slovakia in 2017. Unfortunately I have forgot to declare it as (a therapeutic use) exception.”Jeglic was suspended from the games and has been ordered to leave the athletes village within 24 hours.“I have overlooked the difference between comparable drugs, which are allowed and would enable me to use it for my respiratory problems during the Olympics,” he said. “I apologize for my negligence to all the persons involved and I accept the further anti-doping procedures.”Slovenia lost to Norway 2-1 in overtime in men’s hockey on Tuesday and was eliminated from the Olympic tournament. Jeglic was scratched from the team ahead of the announcement about his positive test. The 29-year-old forward played in all three preliminary-round games and had an assist. He also scored the winner in a shootout as Slovenia beat Slovakia 3-2 on Saturday, a day after he gave his sample to testers.“He’s a big part of our team. We were kind of disappointed and a little upset that he won’t be able to play, but we don’t really know what the situation is,” Slovenia captain Jan Mursak said after the loss to Norway. “Ziga’s a great guy, big part of that team, great team guy, so I’m sure whatever the problem is, it’s going to get fixed and Ziga’s going to be fine.”This is the second consecutive international tournament from which Jeglic has been suspended. He was banned for two games at the world championships last year for swinging his skate at Switzerland winger Thomas Rufenacht.“He’s one of the better players, better offensive players,” Mursak said. “Every guy counts on our team, and to lose a guy like that in such an important game means a lot to our team.”In the Kontinental Hockey League, Jeglic plays for Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. He has two goals and four assists in 26 games this season.Japanese short-track speedskater Kei Saito failed a pre-competition test in Pyeongchang and Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky, who won a bronze medal, tested positive during the games. Late Tuesday, the delegation of the “Olympic Athletes from Russia” said Krushelnitsky’s “B” sample had also tested positive for the banned substance meldonium but the results suggested he had only consumed it once — not enough to indicate intent to enhance his performance.___By CHRIS LEHOURITES , AP Sports WriterAP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno in Gangneung contributed to this report.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Pickering: updated and lite versions of signal routing, software switch path manager

first_img Continue Reading Previous EUROS offers complete Industrial IoT SuiteNext Manhattan Skyline: add modern GUI with high-end graphics and smooth animation to any system Pickering Interfaces introduced version 6 of their signal routing software, Switch Path Manager (SPM), with a range of new capabilities as well as a new “lite” version. This signal routing software simplifies signal routing through complex switching systems and speeds up the development of switching system software. The latest version, Switch Path Manager 6, offers two major updates. The software evaluation period is now 14 days, but the time is based on the number of days the software is actually used rather than a fixed period of time; users are now able to fully evaluate the software as their schedule allows. The addition of Switch Path Manager Lite, a low-cost solution that is fully functional but with an operational limitation of two active switching modules in the configuration. Larger configurations with more than two modules can be created, loaded and edited—but not executed. In contrast to the SPM full license, SPM Lite is not connected to a dedicated computer, once purchased it can be used as a site license. In addition to the major updates above, there is also a range of new capabilities. An enhanced System Configurator Editor gives the user the ability to apply standard functionality like copy, paste, delete, find, replace and cell manipulation. It also offers better filtering technology to filter dedicated pins, and it now has added display options, so the user can decide what will be displayed in the configurator. In the past, if a user wanted to create fixed routes for multipoints (e.g., A connect to B & C), two single routes (A-B, B-C) had to be created and combined into groups—this is now possible in one step. A new and very effective API function has also been added: IsConnectedStatus (EndpointA, EndpointB). With only one simple function call, a user can find out whether given endpoints have been connected by SPM. This functionality is important when a route uses multiple relays, and on that route, there are more endpoints connected to each other than a user is thinking of. Example: A and B have been connected, but C is on the route and connected as well. It is not obvious the user would know about the route A-C-B unless you call IsConnectedStatus()Share this:TwitterFacebookLinkedInMoreRedditTumblrPinterestWhatsAppSkypePocketTelegram Tags: Tools & Software last_img read more

India grant visa to Pakistan squash contingent for World C’ship

first_imgKarachi, Jul 6 (PTI) The Indian High Commission has finally issued visas to the Pakistan squash contingent, allowing the team to participate in World Junior Squash Championships to be held in Chennai from July 17 to 29. Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) secretary, Tahir Sultan said the visa for the last player in the contingent had been issued yesterday. We have now visas for the entire contingent comprising six players and three officials who will take part in the team and individual championships, he said. Initially, the Indian High Commission had returned the passports of the players and officials of PSF without granting them visa. Sultan claimed that it was after the PSF approached the World Squash Federation and Asian Squash Federation and asked them to cancel the event in India that the matter was resolved. We thank the World and Asian bodies for taking up our case and getting the Indian squash body to convince their government to issue us visas in a change of heart, he said. Sultan said that the World Junior Championship is an international event of the World Squash Federation and it has been given to India to host and there was no justification for keeping Pakistan team out of it. We had asked the concerned bodies and affiliated members to intervene and ensure we get the Indian visas or else the World Championship should not be held in India, he said. The PSF official said Pakistan was a pioneer in squash and had produced several world champions and top players.advertisement I would think that in India where the sport is becoming popular they would benefit from watching our team play there, he had said. Imam and Khan propel Pakistan to crushing victory over Zimbabwe

first_img\R Bulawayo, Jul 13 (AFP) Pakistan stormed to a 201-run win over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo today in the opening game of their five-match one-day series. Career-best efforts from opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and leg spinner Shadab Khan ensured that Pakistan kept control through both innings. Opener Imam cracked 128 runs as Pakistan made 308 for 7. Khan then made short work of Zimbabwe’s lower order to collect 4 for 32 as the hosts were bowled out in the 35th over for 107. Imam was backed up by Fakhar Zaman, who continued his good form with 60, and Asif Ali, who smashed a rapid 46 on debut to boost Pakistan’s total after they had been put in to bat under grey, wintery skies this morning. Pakistan started slowly with the bat. With the new ball nipping around Imam played and missed at several deliveries and was lucky to survive an edge off fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani, the ball dropping just in front of second slip. But Imam gritted his way through the difficult patch, and, with Fakhar scoring fluently, Pakistan put on an opening stand of 113 in under 25 overs. Fakhar brought up his fourth fifty of Pakistan’s tour but then hit a return catch to debutant offspinner Liam Roche. Imam then shifted through the gears to bring up a 109-ball hundred in the 37th over. Zimbabwe’s bowlers struck back at the death with Tendai Chatara and Donald Tiripano picking up two apiece, as Pakistan lost five wickets in the last 10 overs. The host were unable to sustain the battle with their bats. Pakistan’s seamers were disciplined with the new ball, and were rewarded with five top-order wickets inside the first 15 overs.advertisement Ryan Murray, on debut, was the only Zimbabwean batsman to come to terms with Pakistan’s attack, compiling a tidy unbeaten 32, to help ensure Zimbabwe would at least pass 100, but with Khan running through the lower order with four wickets the hosts still slumped to the lowest ODI total recorded at the Queens Sports Club The teams face each other again in the second match of the series at the same ground on Sunday. Don’t play Asia Cup: Virender Sehwag slams India’s shocking schedule

first_imgVirender Sehwag has slammed the shocking schedule at the Asia Cup where India have been scheduled to play One Day Internationals on back-to-back days on September 18 and 19.India will be playing two ODIs on consecutive days according to the schedule released for the biennial tournament — set to take place in the UAE from September 15.Defending champions India will face arch-rivals Pakistan on September 19 in their second match of the 2018 Asia Cup.Group A consists of India, Pakistan and the yet-to-be-decided qualifier while Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 4 and two teams will then play the final on 28 September in Dubai.”I am really shocked to see the scheduling because which country plays back-to-back cricket matches these days? There was a gap of two days in between the T20 matches in England and here you are playing ODIs under hot Dubai weather and that too without a break. So, I don’t think this is a correct scheduling,” Sehwag told India TV.”Why there’s such hue and cry over playing the Asia Cup? Don’t play the Asia Cup. Prepare the team for the home series or the away series. It’s really difficult to play back-to-back games,” Sehwag said.Sehwag said a player needs time to attain full fitness after playing a match and BCCI should have at least rescheduled India’s Asia Cup match against the qualifier on September 18.”There shouldn’t be any back-to-back games. If the BCCI had to cancel anything then it should have been the qualifier game in the Asia Cup rather than reducing the four-day practice match against Essex to three days. A player needs at least 48 hours to recover after playing an ODI match because you field for 3.5 hours and after that if you bat for 2 hours then it makes your total time spend on the ground to 5.5 hours. So, it takes a minimum of 24 to 48 hours for a player to recover,” he said.advertisementThe legendary batsman also said playing back-to-back days will tire the Indian players and that will give Pakistan the advantage going into the match.”When Team India will play the Asia Cup in Dubai in September, there will be too much heat and it will hamper the players’ recovery process. Pakistan will be in a good shape whereas the Indian players will be tired. And if we end up losing the match, then there might be a problem as we all are very passionate whenever we play against Pakistan. We always want India to win against Pakistan but if the Indian players are tired then Pakistan will definitely have the advantage,” he said.Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will play the tournament opener in Dubai on September 15. The title clash will be played on September 28 also in Dubai. The 2018 edition of the tournament will be played in 50-over format with the 50-over World Cup scheduled to be held in England and Wales in 2019. The previous Asia Cup was played in the T20 format as it preceded the 2016 World T20.Asia Cup 2018 full schedule:Group StageSeptember 15 – Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka (Dubai)September 16 – Pakistan vs Qualifier (Dubai)September 17 – Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan (Abu Dhabi)September 18 – India vs Qualifier (Dubai)September 19 – India vs Pakistan (Dubai)September 20 – Bangladesh vs Afghanistan (Abu Dhabi)Super FourSeptember 21 – Group A Winner vs Group B Runner-up (Dubai)September 21 – Group B Winner vs Group A Runner-up (Abu Dhabi)September 23 – Group A Winner vs Group A Runner-up (Dubai)September 23 – Group B Winner vs Group B Runner-up (Abu Dhabi)September 25 – Group A Winner vs Group B Winner (Dubai)September 26 – Group A Runner-up vs Group B Runner-up (Abu Dhabi)FinalSeptember 28 – Asia Cup 2018 Final (Dubai)last_img read more

Juan Carlos Osorio steps down as Mexico football team coach

first_imgJuan Carlos Osorio has stepped down from his post as the coach of the Mexico football team. Osorio led Mexico to the last 16 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. The Colombian coach Osorio, who took over El Tri in October 2015, was expected to depart after the finals in Russia, having rejected previous offers from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) to extend his contract.”In my own name and in that of my backroom staff, many thanks to everyone for this unique and unparalleled professional and life experience,” Osorio said in a statement on the FMF website. The Colombian-born coach was often treated with suspicion by Mexican fans and pundits, and supporters frequently chanted ‘Osorio Out’ at Mexico matches, even when they were winning. However, that changed in Russia after Mexico beat reigning world champions Germany 1-0 in their opening match. The Mexicans qualified second in Group F ahead of the Germans and South Korea but lost 2-0 to Brazil in the last 16, the seventh consecutive time they had gone out in the first knockout round.Osorio, who has extensive experience across the Americas and in Europe, speaks English fluently and has expressed an interest in coaching in Europe.(With inputs from Reuters)last_img read more

20-year-old Rishabh Pant becomes India’s 291st Test player

first_imgRishabh Pant was handed his maiden Test cap on Saturday during India’s third Test versus England at Trent Bridge. Pant replaced an injured Dinesh Karthik in the playing XI for the Test match.Pant, who made the Test squad for the first three Test matches on the back of a fantastic Indian Premier League followed by a decent string of scores in England with India ‘A’, became India’s 291st Test player. He was handed the Test cap by India captain Virat Kohli in Nottingham on Saturday.Pant’s inclusion doesn’t come as a surprise as Karthik, who replaced Wriddhiman Saha in the Afghanistan Test and the England tour thereafter, has been struggling with both bat and with the gloves.Karthik has managed scores of 0, 20, 1, 0 from four innings and has failed to impress behind the stumps as well. Karthik also injured his finger during the second Test at Lord’s and has failed to recover from it yet. Thus, paving the way for the swashbuckling Pant to make his debut in the longest format of the game. Also read: Now or never for Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant can wait: Gautam GambhirPant has only played 23 first-class matches and his international experience is limited to four T20Is. However, he can take comfort in his impressive outing in England with the India ‘A’ team in July this year.In two first-class matches, Pant scored 189 runs at an average of 67 and score two fifties in two innings in the match against England A. The other match was played against West Indies A.Also read – Virat Kohli fires Team India up before 3rd Test: Only option is to winadvertisementPrior to his success in England, Pant smashed 684 runs from 14 matches for the Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2018, hitting one century and eight fifties in the process.Primarily considered a limited-overs specialist, Pant’s exploits in red-ball cricket for India ‘A’ earned him praise from pundits. India ‘A’ coach Rahul Dravid also praised Pant for his abilitity to adapt to situations.”Rishabh has shown he could bat differently. He has the temperament and skills to bat differently,” said Dravid.”He is always going to be an attacking player, but reading of the situation when one is playing red-ball cricket is required. We are glad he has been picked in the national team and I hope he takes this maturity and builds thereon.”Soutav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar also batted for Pant to be included in the third Test ahead of Karthik.”I think Rishabh Pant has to come into this side as Dinesh Karthik looks woefully out-of-form. I saw him (Karthik) in the nets and he couldn’t put bat to ball. I think a left-hander in the side will help the team and Pant isn’t scarred by India’s losses and he is also capable of changing the course of a game,” Ganguly told the official broadcaster after India’s humiliating defeat at Lord’s.However, Gavaskar said that if not as a keeper, Pant should play as a batsman down the order.”It is an opportunity for sure and for the third Test he might get into the team. In fact, he might get in the team as a batsman down the order rather than as a wicket-keeper,” Sunil Gavaskar said.last_img read more

Huawei Watch GT launched with 2-week battery life, continuous heart-rate monitoring and 5ATM waterproofing

first_imgHuawei launched its Mate 20 series phones at an event in London on Tuesday night. It launched four new phones under the banner, the Mate 20, the Mate 20 Pro, the Mate 20 X and the Mate 20 RS Porsche Design but evidently it wasn’t enough. The company had two more smart devices to announce, in addition to the Mate 20 series phones, the Watch GT and the Band 3 Pro. The Band 3 Pro is a fitness band. The Watch GT is also a fitness band, only it is masquerading as a smartwatch which could be nice because it does this to achieve long-lasting battery life among other things. The Watch GT, is of course, the more interesting of the two. It is a smarwatch that ditches Google’s Android Wear or Wear OS in favour of a proprietary OS designed to offer a healthy dose of performance and efficiency. This is different from say the Huawei Watch that packed Google’s OS. Huawei Band 3 ProAt the outset, the Huawei Watch GT seems to have one goal. To offer extended battery life and Huawei is quoting some crazy numbers here, enough to warrant interest. Huawei says that its Watch GT can last up to 2 weeks with heart-rate monitoring on and exercise for 90 minutes per week, up to 30 days if you’re only receiving messages and calls with heart-rate monitoring off, and up to 22 hours with continuous exercise tracking, heart-rate monitoring and GPS on.”The Huawei Watch GT uses an innovative smart power-saving algorithm that enables it to dynamically switch between performance and efficiency modes, depending on user activity, for maximum battery life. This allows the smart watch to stay powered for up to two weeks for frequent use mode,” the company says about its new smartwatch.advertisementThe Huawei Watch GT comes with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a 454×454 pixel resolution and will be available in classic and sport options. It comes with stainless steel and ceramic bezels which is 10.6mm thin and is compatible with two band options, a dual-color silicone band and a leather-rubber band. It is 5ATM certified as well. The Watch GT comes with GPS, activity, sleep and step tracking. The optical heart rate sensor on-board uses 6 LEDs and in tandem with Huawei’s TruSeen 3.0 technology, promises more accurate monitoring. The Huawei Band 3 Pro meanwhile comes with a curved 0.95-inch AMOLED touchscreen display. It is also 5ATM certified and offers GPS and heart-rate monitoring at a mainstream price. While the Huawei Watch GT Sport edition has been launched at EUR 199, its Classic edition will cost EUR 249. The Huawei Band 3 Pro has been launched at a price of EUR 99. It is yet to be seen if Huawei brings either of these two devices to India anytime soon.ALSO READ: Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X and Mate 20 RS Porsche Design launched with Kirin 980, triple rear cam setuplast_img read more

Court reserves order on closure report in DDCA funds misappropriation case

first_imgNew Delhi, Oct 24 (PTI) A Delhi Court has reserved its order on whether to accept the closure report of the police in a case relating to alleged misappropriation of funds and forgery in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) by some of its office bearers.Metropolitan Magistrate Abhilash Malhotra has fixed the matter for pronouncing the order on October 30.While the FIR was lodged in November 2015, the Delhi Police filed a closure report in the court in 2016, saying it has found no evidence of misappropriation of funds in the DDCA.”There is no evidence on record to suggest any wrongful loss to DDCA by opening this account in Central Bank and also by transfer of the amount from the other bank accounts of DDCA into this account,” the closure report said. The Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Ravinder Manchanda and Chetan Chauhan, office bearers of the Sports body of DDCA for the alleged offences of criminal breach of trust, cheating, impersonation and forgery in documents. The FIR was lodged on a complaint by DDCA Director and former cricketer Sunil Dev.The FIR had accused Manchanda and Chauhan, Uttar Pradesh minister, of criminal conspiracy along with another senior official of the Central Bank of India for illegally opening a bank account by forging signatures of Dev.The FIR had also alleged that after opening the bank account, they had illegally transferred Rs 6.5 crores into the account and got fixed deposits (FDR) worth Rs 4.5 crores. However, the police said in its closure report that Dev has given a written statement saying the complaints were filed by him due to a misunderstanding with regard to the resolution of the company and now he has seen the records and submitted that the bank account was validly open.advertisement Police said Dev has stated that he wished to withdraw the complaint unconditionally against these persons.Chauhan had also given a written statement to the police stating that the complaint filed by Dev was wrong and was outcome of a misunderstanding. The FIR had alleged that office bearers in pursuance of a criminal conspiracy had “forged documents, committed impersonation, illegally influenced decisions of bank officials to open a bank account even without the formalities being complete, made false statements, siphoned Rs 6.50 crores in the bank accounts, issued blank cheques” among other illegal acts.It had alleged that the illegal account was opened and funds were mobilised to help one of the officer bearers’ wife, who was working as a high official in the same bank where the illegal account was opened in utter violation of RBI norms and guidelines. “The FDR were prepared for denominations of such amounts which fetched lesser interest. The details of the FDR prepared and the interest rate prevailing in the market would clearly reveal that the accused deliberately made the sports body suffer loss of interest and illegal motives,” it had said. After the matter came to light, the sports body had lodged a complaint with the bank’s chairman who stopped operation of the bank account and constituted an internal enquiry into the matter.
