HOUSEHOLDERS PLANNING TO BURN DEMAND LETTERS AT HUGE PROTEST

first_imgHouseholders are being encouraged to bring their reminder letters for the household charge to a public protest  – with many planning to burn them at the rally. The march is being organised by the Donegal Can’t Pay Won’t Pay group which is holding the protest in Letterkenny on December 8th at 2pm.Organisers are encouraging the 30,000 householders who received reminder letters for payment to bring them with them during the protest march. Spokesman for Can’t Pay Won’t Pay Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig, said the group is urging people to ignore these letters as they are “baseless threats that will amount to nothing.”“Bring your letters with you, if you want to show our Co. Council what you think of them. We also urge people to stay strong and maintain their boycott of the household charge and septic tank inspection charge.“This campaign will be won by strength of numbers and continued non payment. The most common suggestion we have recieved from the public and our members, is that we publicly burn them at our protest.“In the past month various Co. County councils and state agencies have tried to scare people into paying the charge. We all remember Clare Co. Council asking people for proof that their household charge was paid, before they would issue third level education grants. “This was quickly rebuffed by legal professionals the move was reversed by Clare Co. Council. This was just another example of misleading scaremongering by Government and Local Authority figures,” he said.He added that since the beginning of the campaign we have endured countless baseless threats like this. It was reported that the charges would be added to utility bills such as your ESB, it then was reported that it would be taken at source ie. wages, welfare payments etc, he said.“All of these threats have been proved to be baseless and people have refused to be duped into paying.“So far up to 60% thats 46,000 people have refused to pay in Donegal. We ask how is the Co. Council gong to take all these people to court. Again we urge people to ignore these letters and to get involved in their local campaign.” HOUSEHOLDERS PLANNING TO BURN DEMAND LETTERS AT HUGE PROTEST was last modified: October 18th, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Donegal County CouncilHOUSEHOLD CHARGEletterslast_img read more

Teen convicted of murders at newsman’s ranch

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – Jurors convicted a 16-year-old boy Tuesday of killing his family and hiding their bodies in a manure pile on newsman Sam Donaldson’s ranch in southern New Mexico. Cody Posey was found guilty of murder in the deaths of his stepmother and stepsister and voluntary manslaughter in the death of his father, who worked as Donaldson’s ranch foreman. Posey hung his head and wept as the verdicts were read, and defense attorney Gary Mitchell offered consolation by putting an arm on the teen’s shoulder. “I just held him like I would my own son,” Mitchell said. Posey was arrested a few days after the bodies of his father and stepmother, Paul and Tryone Posey, and his 13-year-old stepsister, Mary Lee Schmid, were found on Donaldson’s Chavez Canyon Ranch in July 2004. Prosecutor Janice Schryer claimed that Posey’s parents were loving, but said the youth didn’t like ranch life and “took the opportunity to relieve himself of those expectations and that life.” Mitchell argued that the teen, who was 14 at the time of the slayings, was abused by his parents. last_img read more

Relief’s ahead for Highway 14 north of Mojave

first_imgMOJAVE – A $44.9 million widening project will turn a 10.2-mile section of Highway 14 north of Mojave into a divided expressway and revamp its troublesome intersection with California City Boulevard. The California Department of Transportation awarded Granite Construction the contract to expand the highway from two lanes to four lanes from the northern edge of Mojave to about five miles north of California City Boulevard. The work is expected to begin this month. The anticipated completion is summer 2008, said Caltrans spokeswoman Gloria Samaniego. Heavily used by skiers headed to Mammoth Lakes and other travelers to the Owens Valley, the highway is mostly two lanes just north of Mojave. The highway widens to four lanes at the intersection with California City Boulevard, where motorists must halt for stop signs. “That intersection will become an interchange with on- and off-ramps,” Samaniego said. “It will be what we call a cloverleaf.” As the intersection is now configured, motorists leaving California City and heading south must stop at a stop sign for the two northbound lanes of Highway 14. After crossing the northbound lanes, vehicles must make a complete stop again in the highway median before turning onto the two southbound lanes. Since 1999, when the center median was added at the intersection, the intersection has had more than 50 crashes. In April 2003, a Rosamond couple was killed and four others injured when their car was struck by a big rig while they were trying to cross the northbound lanes of Highway 14. The intersection’s deadliest crash occurred in 1994, when four Los Angeles-area residents were killed when a car turning onto the highway was struck by a van. GARDAI INVESTIGATING WEIGHING SYSTEMS AT DONEGAL FISH FACTORY

first_imgGardaí and the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) are investigating weighing systems at a Donegal fish factory which has had its permit suspended on the eve of the herring season.KillybegsThe authority confirmed to The Irish Times that it had suspended the factory’s weigh permit, pending “the outcome of inquiries” involving its officials, the Garda and the National Standards Authority of Ireland. The authority said it was the first time that a permit for this particular premises had been temporarily withdrawn. The company, Sean Ward (Fish Exports) Ltd in Killybegs, has been one of the port’s largest processors and exporters of pelagic (herring/mackerel) fish and employs up to 80 staff at its peak.A spokesman said the company was “ co-operating fully with the SFPA” and it was also conducting an internal investigation and was “ hopeful of a speedy resolution of the matter”.The factor was founded in 1998 and lists a Marine Stewardship Council certification for sustainability.EU fishery regulations require all fishery products to be weighed immediately on landing. The State authority said that a derogation allows the weighing to take place after transport , typically at processing establishments, provided it is “satisfied with the accuracy and correct use of those weighing systems”. “As the matter is ongoing, no further comment can be made at this time,”the SFPA said. The Killybegs factory is the third Irish processor to be the subject of inquiries in the past two years.GARDAI INVESTIGATING WEIGHING SYSTEMS AT DONEGAL FISH FACTORY was last modified: September 24th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalGardaiKillybegsweighing systemslast_img read more

first_imgKerrykeel man Davitt Walsh with the baby he saved. Pic courtesy of NorthWestNewsPixHundreds of people gathered at the Holy Church Family in Derry last night for the month’s mind mass for the Buncrana Pier victims.Louise James was chief mourner, while Kerrykeel man Davitt Walsh, who saved Louise’s daughter from the freezing waters of Lough Swilly, was also in attendance.Fr Paddy O’Kane, who has provided spiritual support to the McGrotty and Daniels families for the past month, was joined at the alter by Bishop of Derry Donal McKeown. In a touching and heartfelt homily, Fr O’Kane recalled “happy-go-lucky” children who loved Derry City Football Club – but not as much as their mum.“Mark loved playing at school, or on the street with his friends,” the priest said.“He would run inside and give Louise a hug and then re-join his friends – for Louise had told him and Evan to come and hug her as often as they wanted.”Sean McGrotty, sons Evan and Mark, mother Ruth Daniels and sister Jodie Lee Daniels all died when their car slipped into Lough Swilly, while baby Rioghnac-Ann was rescued by Walsh.
