Gujarat Dalit activist, who set himself ablaze, succumbs to burn injuries

first_imgDalit activist Bhanu Vankar, who attempted self-immolation in Gujarat on February 15, succumbed to severe burn injuries late on February 16. Mr. Vankar has sustained 80% burn injuries and was admitted in Ahmedabad’s Apollo Hospital, where he died. To protest the Patan district administration’s failure to regularise a piece of land he was allotted a few years ago, he set himself on fire in the Collector Office in North Gujarat. Despite repeated visits to the district administration officials, his case did not move, which apparently distressed him to take an extreme step of ending his life. His suicide is likely to trigger Statewide protests by the Dalit community and organisations working for the rights of Dalits and other marginalised sections in the State. “We have lost him. We hold the district administration responsible for his death. He was forced,” a relative said. Earlier in the day, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered inquiry into the incident. “I have asked Chief Secretary to get all details of the incident after an inquiry,” Mr. Rupani said, adding, “the State government will also bear all medical expenses of Mr. Vankar, who is presently under treatment in Apollo hospital in Ahmedabad.”Moreover, nine other Dalit men were detained by the police after they also tried to storm into the premises of the collectorate with the intention to commit suicide, and were later released. “As many as nine people were detained briefly after they tried to storm into the office of the collector with the intention to commit suicide. They had expressed their intention to the Collector on a previous date and police were deployed in large numbers to prevent any such attempt,” a police official from Patan said. “However, Banubhai Vankar from Unjha village managed to enter the Collector Office premises by jumping over the barricade and set himself on fire. He has been shifted to a hospital in Ahmedabad,” the official had said. The incident triggered a huge backlash among the Dalit community in the State. A leading organisation Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, fighting for the rights of Dalits, gave a call for Patan bandh on February 16 to protest against the “administrative negligence” in the transfer of land to Dalits, “which forced a group to attempt suicide”. The bandh evoked mixed response in the North Gujarat town.A prominent activist and Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani, who is also the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, in a statement said it was a “matter of shame” for the BJP government that Dalits had to resort to extreme steps to fight for their rights in Gujarat.Mr. Mevani demanded suspension of the Collector and Superintendent of Police holding them responsible for driving the community members to take extreme steps to press for their rights.last_img read more

The vessels will also feature WinGD’s dual-fuel low-speed engine (12-cylinder X92DF) and the world’s first GTT MK III membrane fuel tank with a capacity of 18,600 cbm.According to Cansi, the ability and acquired know-how of Jiangnan Shipbuilding to build LNG membrane tanks has provided China with the strategic advantage in this sector, ending Japan’s and South Korea’s monopoly in the large LNG ship construction market.CMA CGM is yet to provide World Maritime News with a comment on the matter. The USD 1.2 billion worth ships, ordered from CSSC’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, are expected to start delivery from the end of 2019 extending into 2020.World Maritime News Stafflast_img read more

World Cup squad Rayudu Rishabh Pant out Karthik in Why Shocking reason

first_imgMS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik after guiding India to victory in Adelaide.Daniel Kalisz/Getty ImagesChief selector of Board of Control for Cricket in India, MSK Prasad, and its acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary announced India’s 15-member World Cup squad on Monday, April 15 and the unlucky names to miss out are Ambati Rayudu along with young Rishabh Pant. The direct beneficiaries in place of the left out duo are Vijay Shankar and Dinesh Karthik. Meanwhile, KL Rahul has been picked as the backup opener and Ravindra Jadeja will also be taking the flight to England given his three-dimensional ability — spinner, lower-middle order batsman and a terrific fielder. Squad: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni, Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh KarthikAfter announcing the squad, MSK Prasad addressed the press, answering all questions regarding the spots that were up for grabs. He justified the inclusions as well as the unfortunate exclusions. “Well, it’s definitely a case where we have debated at length and all of us, in unison, felt that either Rishabh Pant or DK will only come into the playing XI if Mahi (MS Dhoni) is injured,” said MSK Prasad on the criteria for selecting the reserve wicketkeeper.  Rishabh Pant walks off after being dismissed in the first T20I.Hagen Hopkins/Getty ImagesThe chief selector went on to say that Karthik’s superior wicketkeeping ability gave him the edge of the 21-year-old Pant. “So at that juncture, it is a crucial match like the semifinal or an important game (of the World Cup), wicketkeeping also matters. So that’s the only reason why we went ahead with Dinesh Karthik, otherwise, Rishabh Pant was almost there,” MSK Prasad added. MSK Prasad addressed the number 4 debate and spoke about why Ambati Rayudu missed out. “We did give a few more chances to Rayudu but what Vijay Shankar offers is three-dimensional. Apart from his batting, he can bowl. If the conditions are suitable and overcast, he might bowl a bit; he’s a fantastic fielder. That’s the thing that went in favour of Vijay Shankar,” MSK Prasad outlined.  The entire nation will be looking up to Kohli during the World Cup.GIANLUIGI GUERCIA/AFP/Getty ImagesAddressing Vijay Shankar as a batsman who can bowl, MSK Prasad said, “We are looking at him at number 4 and we are also looking at Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav — so we have plenty of options at number 4 at the moment.” The chief selector reiterated that their preferred number 4, to begin with, will be Vijay Shankar and changes can be made if he does not perform. He also spoke about the inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja and said that the wickets will get dry as the English summer progresses wherein an extra spinner will be of help. “There might be a situation where you might require an additional all-rounder in the playing XI. In the second part of the tournament, when the wickets might be a bit drier, so that’s where we felt Jadeja might come in handy and that’s the reason why he has been picked.”last_img read more

Students Protest Sanctions Against Student Leader For Writing Forget Black Lives Matter

first_img 00:00 /01:12 To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Listen Laura IsenseeThe student government at UH is still grappling with the fallout since a student body vice president wrote on Facebook “Forget #BlackLivesMatter.” At a recent meeting, Kadidja Koné urged student representatives to keep the sanctions against that leader, Rohini Sethi. For the last month, controversy has roiled the University of Houston ever since a student leader wrote on Facebook “Forget #BlackLivesMatter” in the wake of the shootings against Dallas police. It triggered a campaign to remove her from office and the student government suspended her. Now others are protesting that move, decrying it as stifling free speech.Dozens of people showed up at the UH student government meeting Wednesday night to support Rohini Sethi, the student body vice president at the center of the controversy. She was recently sanctioned by student government for dismissing Black Lives Matter and saying All Lives Matter. She’s been suspended and has to attend a workshop on cultural sensitivity.“Government institutions cannot in effect remove someone’s constitutional rights. She has a constitutional right to express herself,” said Matthew Wiltshire, a history major at UH who organized the show of support.  “The problem for me is that one entire aspect of diversity is overlooked, that being diversity of opinion,” he added.Wiltshire pressed that argument at the student government meeting. If anything, the debate there revealed that the controversy over cultural insensitivity and racial inclusion isn’t over at UH. “The freedom of speech is not what is being punished. We all have our right to say whatever we want to say. I respect each and everyone’s opinion whether it’s against me or for me. The problem is if you represent me, I expect you to understand my struggle and I expect you to be correct,” Kadidja Koné with the black student union told student senators.“If you are going to represent a student body with 10 percent black individuals, and you say something that is offensive to them and they tell you they find it offensive and they no longer feel you can properly represent them, we as your constituents, you are supposed to understand and respect that,” she explained. Some student government representatives considered throwing out the sanctions against the vice president because of some technical rules. But for now the sanctions stand.
