The observation forms part of activities to commemorate the country’s 33rd Anniversary of Independence.A number of business places are reporting increased sales of Dominica’s National Flag, since students all over the island are being encouraged to bring a flag to school on Wednesday.Chief Cultural Officer, Mr Raymond Lawrence said that the Flag Day initiative is aimed at demonstrating the significance of the National Flag, one of the country’s emblems.“We introduced Flag Day about five years ago to draw more attention and to build more appreciation of Dominica’s national flag. We thought as well that it would be a good opportunity to explain the significance of the flag to our school children so that our young people would have a better understanding of the meaning and significance of the national flag and its uses.”Vehicle owners are encouraged to display flags on their vehicles while business owners are also encouraged to display flags at their respective place of business.“Apart from that we encourage the business places and the government offices to display flags and even members of the public to display flags in their offices and their schools all in an effort to give greater exposure and to showcase it in a sense to the wider public and to show visitors that we are proud to be Dominicans and we are proud or our national flag.”Dominican artist and playwright Alwin Bully designed the flag in early 1978 in preparation for the gaining of independence from Britain later that year and the cabinet made certain small alterations to the original design.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
