Lithuania selects where 700 MW offshore wind farm will be built

first_imgThe tender to select the owner and developer of the wind farm is scheduled to be held in 2023, the government said. The draft legislation will then be submitted to the interested institutions for coordination, and to start coordinating the proposed support scheme with the European Commission. Prior to this period, the approved spatial planning and environmental procedures – the special plan, the strategic environmental impact assessment, and the environmental impact assessment – will be performed by the Lithuanian Energy Agency. The Government of Lithuania has settled on the position of the country’s first offshore wind farm, with the capacity of up to 700 MW, in the Baltic Sea. The project is expected to attract around € 1 billion in private investments. Once commissioned, the wind farm is expected to generate up to three TWh of electricity annually, corresponding to one-quarter of the country’s current electricity consumption. The site covers an area of 137.5 square kilometres, with a distance from shore of approximately 29 kilometres, an average water depth of 35 metres, and an average wind speed of approximately 9 m/s. The government also approved the concept of wind power development in the Lithuanian maritime territory prepared by the Ministry of Energy, which proposes changes in the legal regulation taking into account the recommendations of a working group consisting of state institutions and social partners.center_img The government has decided that the wind farm will be built and commissioned by 2030 at the site previously proposed and considered in the draft Government Resolution, which has now been adopted. The government instructed the Ministry of Energy to prepare draft laws regulating the support scheme for offshore wind farms by 1 July. Amendments to law “By employing offshore wind, we will achieve ambitious renewable energy targets and reduce electricity imports from other countries. Our goal is to develop offshore wind in the most efficient and competitive way, and at the same time it will be an opportunity to attract world-class investors to Lithuanian energy,” said Lithuania’s Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas. In addition, taking into account the experience of foreign countries and the fact that the development of networks for the connection of planned power plants in the maritime area may take up to eight years, the government proposed to the transmission system operator to start preparatory work for the connection of offshore wind farms to the grid.last_img read more

First ships dock at Port of Ngqura

first_img13 October 2009The MSC Catania made history last week when it became the first commercial vessel to discharge its cargo at South Africa’s new deepwater Port of Ngqura, which forms part of the Coega industrial development zone outside Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province. On Sunday 4 October, the MSC Catania loaded and off-loaded a total of 275 containers, at an average of 19 containers per hour. The second commercial vessel to call at Ngqura – the 275 metre long MSC Shanghai with a draft of 14.5m – entered the port on Tuesday 6 October to discharge cargo at Ngqura’s container terminal.“This was the first time the large vessel was able to call in Port Elizabeth, and it took advantage of the Port of Ngqura’s deep water capacity, with an entrance channel depth of 18 metres and a basin depth of 16 metres,” state logistics company Transnet said in a statement. The MSC Shanghai off-loaded 50 containers and loaded 101 containers, with an average 17 containers being handled per hour.Container traffic growthThe Port of Ngqura and its 60-hectare container terminal represents Transnet’s solution to South Africa’s long-time shortage of container capacity, resulting from the growth in container traffic worldwide. To date, Transnet has invested in excess of R10-billion to develop the state-of-the-art port and associated infrastructure. This will include a world-class two-berth container terminal – with a further two berths under construction – a two-berth multipurpose terminal, and a one-berth liquid bulk terminal. The Port of Ngqura’s advantage over other ports in Africa is that it is a deepwater port, with a depth of between 16 and 18 metres, allowing it to accommodate the new-generation container vessels.Making historyThe crane which lifted the first container off the first commercial vessel to discharge at Ngqura was operated by a female crane driver.Nozuko Caroline Ndevulana became a trailblazer when, seated at the controls of a Megamax ship-to-shore crane, she picked up the first container off the MSC Catania.“Caroline is a seasoned crane operator – in addition to STS cranes, she is also certified on rail-mounted gantries,” Transnet said.Ndevulana joined Transnet Port Terminals’ container terminal in Port Elizabeth in 2002 as an articulated vehicle driver before progressing to the ranks of operator on straddle carriers as well as cranes.“I am so proud to have been part of history in the making while also contributing towards the economy of the country,” she said.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast — October 12, 2017

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Ryan Martin 10-12-17Drier weather is here. It may not seem like it in parts of the state today, as lingering clouds and cooler temps don’t allow for the drier feel we have become used to over the past weeks and months. However, we have no new rain on the way, and we should see better chances of sunshien going forward, even by the end fo the dsay today. Full sun is on the way for tomorrwo and Saturday, with gusty winds emerging late tomorrow through Saturday and most of Sunday ahead of our next front. These winds, along with low humidity and near maximum evaporation rates, should allow for good drying tomorrow through most of the weekend. Our next system is still on the way for late in the weekend. We see the cold front holding off until very late Sunday afternoon to arrive. Then rains continue through the evening and overnight, finally exiting the state to the east as the sun rises Monday morning. Our rain totals this morning for the system are unchanged; we like rains of .25”-.75” over about 75% of the state. The map above shows the set up Sunday evening.Fantastic drying weather is in for next week. Initially behind the front on Monday we will be stuck with some cooler temps, similar to the air mass that came in behind our front earlier this week. However, that cooler air moderates and moves away rather quickly, and we see temps building through the rest of the week. Sunshine will dominate, and we will keep dry weather in all the way through next weekend. Our next frontal threat comes no sooner than the 24th. That system looks nice and strong, and will have the potential to bring up to three quarters of an inch for the 24th and maybe into the 25th, over 80% of the state. But, the 7-8 days ahead of it, we should be able to start seeing some movement back in the fields. By the end of next week, we think temps will be mostly above normal over the entire state.Late in the extended window, behind the front for the 24th-25th, we could see some significantly cooler air come in, and it may trigger better chances of frost over parts of Ohio, particularly north and west.last_img read more

Photo: Someone Left An Extremely NSFW Message On The 2014 Results Page Of The ACC Media Guide

first_imgNC State 2014 football schedule featuring a NSFW message.Twitter/@MrsTylerKSR Being an intern isn’t always fun. Occasionally, you’ll get stuck typing up menial things, like the 2014 schedules and results for the ACC’s 14 member schools. As frustrating and tedious as that may get, dropping an F-bomb and forgetting to deleting it, and then having that print out in every edition of the guide being given out at ACC media days probably isn’t the best course of action. Or, perhaps they’re not a fan of Wake Forest’s poor season? The Clawfense is a work in progress, give it time sir!Part of me laughed, part died, when I saw three-word “error” on page 145 in ACC FB media guide unveiled today.
