OIT works on CIF system after Dec. crash

first_imgThe University’s Course Instructor Feedback (CIF) system experienced problems at the end of last semester, resulting in the entire student body receiving their grades at the earliest time, Erin Hoffmann Harding, associate vice president for Strategic Planning, said. “For a period of about three hours on the last night of the CIF window for most undergraduate courses, the OIT server supporting the CIF system experienced a slow down in performance,” Hoffmann Harding said. “The system never crashed, almost 1,000 surveys were successfully submitted during this time and no information was lost.” Some students who tried to access the system could not complete their CIFs, she said. Beginning during the 2009 fall semester, completing CIFs allowed students to view their semester grades seven days early. “The system slow down prevented some students from successfully submitting their CIFs,” she said. “Unfortunately, it was not possible to reopen the survey system prior to the beginning of final exams. It was also not feasible to identify which students had been affected by the slowed performance.” Administrators decided to modify the grade holding policy for the fall semester only, Hoffmann Harding said. OIT is investigating the system problems, and the early grade incentive will exist again in the spring. Hoffmann Harding said the CIF system is still in development, and the next priority is to solve the performance speed. “The system will also soon have the ability to provide more customized information to students in e-mails about which CIFs they still need to complete and when their individual survey windows close,” she said. “We welcome suggestions about other enhancements that would improve students’ ability to offer feedback to their professors.” The response rate was 78 percent for all of the fall 2010 courses, she said. This rate was lower than fall 2009, but exceeded the response rate for fall 2008. Dennis Jacobs, vice president and associate provost, said feedback from CIFs is integrated into the classroom through feedback given directly to departments and faculty. “Instructors are provided with a detailed summary report of the CIF data collected for every course section they teach,” Jacobs said. “For each CIF item, the instructor can see the distribution of student responses, a calculated mean score, and a comparison to the scores received by other faculty who teach similar courses at Notre Dame.” Professors also see the open-ended answers, but they cannot see student names, he said. This allows for anonymity. “Many faculty members reflect on thoughtful CIF feedback from their students as they consider ways to improve their teaching in future semesters,” he said. Past improvements to CIFs have provided more incentive for students to complete them, Jacobs said. “Five of the questions appearing on the CIF were written together by students and faculty with the purpose of providing more information at the time of course selection,” he said. “The results to these five items are displayed within Class Search on the Registrar’s website.” Only students who have completed their CIFs the previous semester can view these results, Jacobs said. “This enhancement to Class Search along with gaining earlier access to grades provide two valuable incentives for students to complete all their CIFs,” he said.last_img read more

Help clean South Africa ‘to honour Madiba’

first_imgCapeNature, the conservation authority in the Western Cape, marked Mandela Day 2013 by conducting a clean-up in areas surrounding their head office (image: CapeNature)The government has called on all South Africans to honour former president Nelson Mandela by actively participating in the Clean South Africa campaign this Mandela Month. The campaign was first mooted by President Jacob Zuma during his State of the Nation Address last month, when he called on South Africans to begin planning for a major clean-up of cities, towns, townships, villages and schools.Speaking to reporters in Pretoria on Thursday following the Cabinet’s latest fortnightly meeting, Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said a Clean South Africa award would be presented to the country’s top three municipalities for Mandela Month.“We all have a responsibility to honour [Mandela’s] life by cleaning, improving and beautifying our communities,” Muthambi said.Celebrated across the globe in honour of the late statesman’s birthday on 18 July, the day gives everyone the opportunity to emulate Mandela’s role as public servant.“Mandela Day is not only about doing good, it is about service,” Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang said at the launch of this year’s event in April. “It is an opportunity to build upon Mr Mandela’s lifelong belief that we must live to serve every day, in whatever we do.”Mandela Day, Hatang said, creates an opportunity for society’s “haves” and “have nots” to work together to confront social ills within their communities and to build a better world. This year’s Mandela Day will be particularly symbolic in that it offers South Africans, and the world, an occasion to honour the ethos of the late Mr Mandela in the year that marks South Africa’s 20th year of democracy. The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008, when he said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.”The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s “values and his dedication to the service of humanity” and acknowledging his contribution “to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world”.The Mandela Day campaign asks that individuals, groups and corporates pledge 67 minutes of their time on 18 July, and every day thereafter, to give back. This can be by supporting a charity or serving the community. No matter how small the action, the aim is to change the world for the better – just as Mandela did.last_img read more

Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast — October 12, 2017

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Ryan Martin 10-12-17Drier weather is here. It may not seem like it in parts of the state today, as lingering clouds and cooler temps don’t allow for the drier feel we have become used to over the past weeks and months. However, we have no new rain on the way, and we should see better chances of sunshien going forward, even by the end fo the dsay today. Full sun is on the way for tomorrwo and Saturday, with gusty winds emerging late tomorrow through Saturday and most of Sunday ahead of our next front. These winds, along with low humidity and near maximum evaporation rates, should allow for good drying tomorrow through most of the weekend. Our next system is still on the way for late in the weekend. We see the cold front holding off until very late Sunday afternoon to arrive. Then rains continue through the evening and overnight, finally exiting the state to the east as the sun rises Monday morning. Our rain totals this morning for the system are unchanged; we like rains of .25”-.75” over about 75% of the state. The map above shows the set up Sunday evening.Fantastic drying weather is in for next week. Initially behind the front on Monday we will be stuck with some cooler temps, similar to the air mass that came in behind our front earlier this week. However, that cooler air moderates and moves away rather quickly, and we see temps building through the rest of the week. Sunshine will dominate, and we will keep dry weather in all the way through next weekend. Our next frontal threat comes no sooner than the 24th. That system looks nice and strong, and will have the potential to bring up to three quarters of an inch for the 24th and maybe into the 25th, over 80% of the state. But, the 7-8 days ahead of it, we should be able to start seeing some movement back in the fields. By the end of next week, we think temps will be mostly above normal over the entire state.Late in the extended window, behind the front for the 24th-25th, we could see some significantly cooler air come in, and it may trigger better chances of frost over parts of Ohio, particularly north and west.last_img read more

The young defender has impressed Conte with his start to life at Stamford Bridge and he looks assured enough on the ball to take over in the middle of the back line. Conte has a choice to make on whether to pick Hazard or Pedro for the left attacking midfield role, but Willian will likely start on the right as he is the fittest of the three forwards. William 15/8 to score anytimeChelsea rested many players against Forest and Thibaut Courtois, Alvaro Morata and Cesar Azpilicueta are just some of the big names that will return after a midweek break. Chelsea’s 3-4-3 remains the club’s primary formation after Conte won the title with the system last season. However, they have also lined up in the 3-5-2 formation on a few occasions this term. Chelsea team vs Stoke City GFXSTOKE CITY TEAM NEWS Kurt Zouma will be unavailable to face his parent club due to the terms in his loan deal, which causes defensive issues for Stoke with several other players out. Geoff Cameron is suffering from a hamstring injury so he also misses out in defence, while Ryan Shawcross is also a doubt with a back injury. Ibrahim Afellay and Stephen Ireland remain out with long term injuries, but the Potters have a clean bill of health for the rest of their first team.Jese Rodriguez BerahinoBEST OPTA MATCH FACTS Stoke City have suffered 13 Premier League defeats against Chelsea in the Premier League; more than they have against any other opponent.
