Staying ahead of the regulatory curve: Spotlight on the unbanked

first_imgWhen it comes time to conduct a compliance examination, it’s not feasible for examiners to scrutinize every transaction in every area. That means some areas are bound to receive more emphasis than others, and those areas of emphasis are constantly evolving. So how can a financial institution get a sense of what is coming down the road? It’s no secret that the mission of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is to protect consumers. That is, after all, its name. And whether your financial institution is regulated directly by the CFPB or not, the bureau’s impact is felt throughout the industry as it revises regulations that are applicable to all banks and credit unions. One category of consumer that the CFPB is especially concerned about is the financially underserved market. These are consumers who are unbanked or underbanked, have subprime credit scores or are un-scorable, or have low or volatile income. Two groups, the Center for Financial Services Innovation and Core Innovation Capital, recently released a report addressing how much these consumers have to spend to conduct their financial transactions. High-profile studies such as this are likely to attract the CFPB’s attention, so it is worthwhile to take a look at them to see how they might shape current and future regulatory attention. continue reading » 5SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Iowa to launch statewide rape kit tracking system

first_imgDES MOINES — After a recent survey found thousands of sexual assault evidence kits were left untested in Iowa, the state is launching a plan to keep close track of such rape kits in the future.Lynn Hicks, communications director for the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, says a sample-tracking software company is being hired to roll out its Track-Kit system to all regions of the state by mid-2020.Hicks says, “Basically, it will follow the rape kits from the time a kit is at the medical facility or hospital and used in an exam, and then all the way through the final disposition of the case.”According to Hicks, the system will connect more than 1,200 users at Iowa medical facilities, law enforcement agencies, crime laboratories, and county attorney’s offices.“Most important, it will allow that sexual assault survivor to be able to get information on the status and location of the kit,” Hicks says, “so they would be able to follow it throughout the process.”A survey in 2017 by the Iowa Attorney General’s Crime Victim Assistance Division found more than 4,200 untested rape kits in police departments and sheriff’s offices across Iowa. Efforts are being made, Hicks says, to tackle that backlog, but the new tracking system is also crucial.“We think this is going to be a big step forward,” Hicks says. “This software will increase the accountability and transparency throughout the process and ultimately will empower survivors of sexual assault.”Of the 4,200 untested rape kits found statewide, more than 1,600 have been sent to private labs for testing. From those, Hicks says 235 DNA profiles have been entered into CODIS, the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System. Of those, 127 were hits, or matches to DNA in the database, enabling the information to be forwarded on to prosecutors.last_img read more

LABOUR OF LOVE GETS HUGH TO THE CHURCH ON TIME…AND IN STYLE!

first_imgMost grooms hate the one hundred and one details about organising a wedding. But for Hugh Sweeney, his one detail was a labour of love – even if it did take him more than a year to get right! While wife-to-be Joanne arranged the dresses, suits, flowers, hotel and invitations, Hugh, 29, organised the wedding car. But his was no ordinary wedding car.The electrician from St.Johnston had always dreamt of arriving at the church in Starsky and Hutch style! And so he went about building his very own replica Gran Torino sports-car from the 1970s American TV cop show complete with dashing white stripe.“It was just something I always wanted to do. I loved the car and I loved the television show. “I told Joanne about it and she just said ‘why not?’.Hugh bought the shell of the car from Marshall Motors in Michigan, USA and then imported it.What followed was a year long labour of love spraying it, fitting new floors, new upholstery – a project which only finished a few hours before he walked down the aisle on July 23rd last.“Myself and my friend Adrian Duffy, who was the real brains behind the project, were up until 2.30am putting on the white stripe but it was worth it,” he laughed.Hugh along with bestman Mark McCauley and groomsmen Stephen Graham and Roderick McCready arrived in style at St.Baitin’s Church where they turned heads. After the ceremony Hugh and new wife Joanne made their way to the Radisson Hotel in Letterkenny where the car was the talk of the wedding reception.Hugh said Joanne didn’t mind Hugh spending so much time fixing up their wedding car revealing she even helped him search on-line for parts! The couple went on holiday to Florida and car-fanatic Hugh revealed how they even took in a couple of car shows along the way.The Grand Tarino now sits proudly at the couple’s home but with its 5.8 Litre petrol engine, Hugh admits that getting just 8 miles to the gallon doesn’t inspire long journeys. The car is now worth at least €20,000 and Hugh says there may be a small problem as the couple settle down to married life.“It’s only a two door. I might have to go and look for a five door if we ever think of extending the family,” he laughed.EndsLABOUR OF LOVE GETS HUGH TO THE CHURCH ON TIME…AND IN STYLE! was last modified: September 23rd, 2011 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Hugh SweeneySt JohnstonStarsky and Hutchlast_img read more
