Ocean City’s Downtown Wins People’s Choice Award

first_imgCrowds jam Asbury Avenue between Fifth and 14th streets in Ocean City (NJ) during the annual Spring Block Party on Saturday, May 3.In a three-town race to be named southern New Jersey’s favorite downtown, Ocean City crushed the competition in the 2014 People’s Choice Awards.Ocean City’s Asbury Avenue captured 63.5 percent of the vote — more than double the percentage of Haddon Avenue in Collingswood (25.3 percent). The Glasstown Arts District in Millville finished third with 11.2 percent.Ocean City’s total number of votes — 4,996 — almost doubled the vote totals of the top downtowns in northern New Jersey (Hoboken with 2,576) and central New Jersey (Red Bank with 2,325).The contest is sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association and was decided by the public voting online for their favorite downtown in the three areas of New Jersey.__________See results: njplanning.org/news/peoples-choice-awards__________“It really does show the support of the community, the second homeowners, and all the extended people who feel their roots are here,” Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michele Gillian said.“It’s something we try to foster with events and marketing,” she said of customer loyalty to Ocean City’s “large” and “unique” mix of downtown shops and restaurants.“Once again, it’s where America’s Greatest Family Resort shops,” said Paul Cunningham, co-chairman of the Downtown Merchants Association. “I think it’s great that we were recognized by our customers.”Ocean City’s downtown consists of more than 100 mostly family-owned businesses between Sixth and 11th streets on Asbury Avenue. The downtown side streets, Asbury Avenue between 11th and 14th streets and parts of West Avenue add to Ocean City’s shopping district. The People’s Choice Awards are part of APA-NJ’s Great Places in New Jersey awards program. A panel of planning professionals selected Downtown Ocean City from nominations that APA-NJ received from the public throughout the month of July. When notifying Ocean City, APA-NJ officials indicated that the panel deliberated how well each downtown excels in the characteristics of a great downtown, including how well it functions as the centerpiece in the everyday life of the community; its reputation for excellence even beyond the community’s boundaries; its vitality during the day, in the evening and on weekends; available options for transportation; and support from the community to attract, retain and grow businesses.Winners will receive a plaque at a local award ceremony, a place on the map of Great Places in New Jersey at njplanning.org, and, of course, bragging rights.“Great places happen because they are planned for and implemented by people who set high marks for themselves and their communities,” said APA-NJ President Charles Latini, Jr., AICP. “They take hard work, planning and re-planning as time stretches across political tenure, but all of them are places their citizens take pride in. The interest in voting reveals this pride.”In July, a panel of planning professionals had selected the contestants from nominations submitted by the public, and the 11,421 online ballots cast by the public determined the competition over the past five weeks. Other regional winners include Hoboken in Northern New Jersey and Downtown Red Bank in Central New Jersey.“What better way to pick the top downtowns than to hear from the people who know them?” said Linda E. Wills, AICP, APA-NJ Great Places Chair. “These downtowns offer inspiration to communities looking to make their own downtowns great. They have overcome many obstacles, and today, they reap the benefits from forging effective public and private.”last_img read more

New House economic package includes $2.25 billion for biofuels

first_imgWASHINGTON — The $3 trillion economic recovery plan introduced in the U.S. House includes $2.25 billion for the biofuels industry. Iowa Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer, a Democrat from Dubuque, is part of the House Biofuels Caucus that lobbied for the assistance.“This is obviously a meaningful step towards protecting our producers and providing relief to this vital sector of our economy that means so much to our state, to our agricultural community, also to rural Iowa and our cities,” Finkenauer says.Under the plan, ethanol and biodiesel plants would get payments based on the gallons each produce.“At a rate of 45 cents per gallon for fuel produced between January and May of this year,” Finkenauer says, “and then for plants forced to shut down, the bill provides 22.5 cents per gallon on the amount produced during the same period last year in 2019.”There are eight biofuels plants in Finkenauer’s congressional district which covers the northeast quarter of Iowa.“And I know they are struggling,” Finkenauer says. “Just last month the ADM ethanol production plant in Cedar Rapids shut down, furloughing 90 workers.”Growth Energy, a trade group for the industry, projects biofuels production has been cut in half due to the pandemic and the Trump Administration waivers for oil refineries, so they don’t have to blend ethanol into gasoline. Iowa Congresswoman Cindy Axne, a Democrat from West Des Moines, is also a member of the House Biofuels Caucus. She says the downturn in the biofuels industry is having a devastating economic impact, leading to rural job losses and falling corn prices.last_img read more

HPs 449 Chromebook 15 Has RazorThin Bezels AllDay Battery

That sleek design is enabled by razor-thin bezels that border the laptop’s 15.6-inch, 1080p touch screen display. We’ve seen these so-called edge-to-edge displays on countless laptops over the past year, but rarely at this price.MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Which 13-inch MacBook Is Right For You?Apple’s entry-level MacBook Air and Pro look pretty similar, but our testing proved they differ in crucial ways.Your Recommended PlaylistVolume 0%Press shift question mark to access a list of keyboard shortcutsKeyboard Shortcutsplay/pauseincrease volumedecrease volumeseek forwardsseek backwardstoggle captionstoggle fullscreenmute/unmuteseek to %SPACE↑↓→←cfm0-9接下来播放Which Cheap Tablet Is Best? That combination of materials will hopefully give the Chromebook 15 a premium feel.HP has a strong track record for crafting comfortable keyboards. The company’s Spectre, Envy and EliteBook laptops all provide an excellent typing experience, so we’re hoping HP used the same formula on the Chromebook 15. Given that the backlit keyboard spans the entire width of the 15-inch laptop’s frame, the keys should at least be large and well-spaced.  At $449, you shouldn’t expect the base Chromebook 15 to run demanding programs or modern games. However, with an Intel Pentium Gold 4417U CPU, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of eMMC flash storage and an HD 610 GPU, you should be able to browse the web and load apps without issue. Power users can opt for a higher-end configuration that has a Core i CPU (HP has not yet revealed the specific CPU model) and up to a 128GB SSD.HP promises 13 hours of battery life out of the Chromebook 15, which would be an impressive result, even for a Chromebook. However, we’ll need to put the notebook through our battery test to determine real-world results. And as per usual, HP’s new laptop comes onboard with dual B&O-tuned speakers, so you should expect solid audio quality. The Chromebook 15 is available today.
